The imposing Melk Abbey is a top excursion destination in the Wachau. The library, marble hall, collegiate church and collegiate park are still impressive today. Melk Abbey is located in Lower Austria near the town of Melk on the right bank of the Danube. Melk Abbey has been inhabited by Benedictine monks since it was founded in 1089.

The Wachau, the narrow Danube valley between Melk and Krems, is one of the most beautiful and most visited regions in Austria. In 2000, the cultural landscape of the Wachau with the old town of Krems and the Melk and Göttweig monasteries were included in the list of UNESCO world cultural and natural heritage sites.
