Mariazell in northern Styria is the most important and most visited place of pilgrimage in Austria. According to tradition, Mariazell was founded on 21 December 1157. A construction inscription above the main portal with the year 1200 allows this time to begin as the construction of the Romanesque chapel. The Mariazell Basilica has two centers: the sacral Chapel of Mercy and the artistic one of the Fischer von Erlach high altar. The centerpiece of everything is the miraculous image, a late Romanesque statue of the Mother of God carrying the child on her right arm (Magna Mater Austriæ - also called the Madonna of the Bell - a sculpture of lime wood 48 cm in size).
